Conference Panel on Reception of the Byzantine Heritage in the Christian East

The conference was attended by scholars from STOUH, the Higher School of Economics, the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Asian and African Countries of Moscow State University, Moscow Theological Academy, and St. Petersburg State University, and also featured talks from an independent researcher from Ekaterinburg and a foreign scholar from Canada.

Priest Alexander Treiger of Dalhousie University, Canada, gave a presentation on “The Spiritual Paradise: Issues of Contextualization of the Greek Original and Arabic Translation”. The “Spiritual Paradise” (Arabic al-Firdaws al-ʿaqlī) is an anonymous Christian treatise on spiritual life, originally written in Greek and then, in the 11th century, translated into Arabic somewhere around Antioch. The paper analyzed the sources of the “Spiritual Paradise” (which include the writings of Greek Church Fathers – Macarius, Gregory the Theologian, Dorotheos of Gaza, John Climacus, and Maximus the Confessor – as well as spiritually edifying stories from the Paterikon) and considered the contextualization of the Greek original and the Arabic translation.
