STOUH Slavic Studies Scholars at Belgrade University Conference

On May 24, 2022, students and lecturers of the Department of Slavic Philology of the Faculty of History and Philology of STOUH, in conjunction with the Serbian Society of Slavists, held a conference in honor of the Day of Slavic Letters (Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius).

The Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade, Iva Draškić Vikanović, delivered a welcome address. She spoke about the history of the Day of Slavic Letters, and pointed out the importance of this cultural heritage for all Slavic peoples and the need to observe it as a key event in the history of the Slavs.

Teachers from the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade took part in the conference, and students from the faculty recited poetry in Serbian.

Another welcome speech was given by Ekaterina Dobrushina, Head of the Department of Slavic Philology of the Faculty of History and Philology of STOUH, who spoke about Serbian studies at STOUH and expressed her hope for further cooperation between the two universities.

A combined ensemble from STOUH’s Faculty of History and Philology performed the Serbian folk song “Suza Kosova”, and STOUH students read poems by the Russian émigré poet Sergei Bekhteev, as well as by the famous Serbian poets Jovan Dučić and Desanka Maksimović.

The warm and friendly atmosphere gave rise to a lot of positive emotions and all the students found it to be moving. Such joint celebrations show how strong the bond between Russian and Serbian people remains to this day, and how united our cultural and historical trajectories are, which is something that we must remember and appreciate.
